Jan Steen's 'The Village School'

Franz Hals 'A Fisher Boy'

Nice to see everyone - a good turn out too! The group is growing and it really shows when it comes to coffee time!!

Wow, that's an interesting interpretation of "the village school"! I like that drawing because of the subtle hints that it makes: a teacher is a drunk (bottles above his head!), he is treating children badly, a girl is happy (with such an evil grin heheh!) that a boy is being hit, as soon as the teacher is distructed another kid is touching things on the walls which they aren't supposed to play with...
However there is no satire in the stylized scribble at all :) I really like how you could change something dark into simething so artistic!

Thanks Marta!

Well, I did want to reference some element of the perspective taken by the artist - so I gave the girl (evil one!) a mask. I think the shapes for the teacher were also to evoke a type of mask too - a figure to be fearful of..

I could have spent more time on it too but got restless and wanted to go for coffee :)

Nice work, Tracy - both of them. I rather like Marta's angle on it too. Gearoid.
