Sketches from Griffith College and Noshington

Bit of a damp squib of a day, but we sketched between the showers .... most of us over hot beverages and tastey food in the very welcoming Noshington on the South Circular. We all had a shot at sketching each other, with much amusement along the way.

Some people might not have made it to Noshington cos of the rain, so do email in any sketches and we can put them up.

Sunday 30 July - Griffith College

This Sunday 30 July, Dublin Sketchers are meeting at Griffith College, South Circular Road, Dublin 8.

Griffith College is located in the grounds of an old army barracks and contains many stone buildings to admire.  There are also many picturesque little streets to explore in the neighbourhood with some beautiful nineteenth century red-brick houses.

Our starting point is 2pm at the front entrance of the college.

If you can’t find any sketchers at the beginning don’t worry … and if you’re late you won’t be the only one.  It’s Sunday afternoon and we’re not famous for our punctuality.  Just get started and keep your eyes open for other sketchers.

We’ll meet again at 4pm and adjourn to Noshington Café (across the road from the college entrance) for coffee and a chat.

If you haven't been before, keep your eyes open for anyone carrying a sketch book and come and say hello.  Dublin Sketcher’s is FREE – just bring your own drawing materials.

Hope to see you there!

Sunday 23rd July 2017 Dublin Sketchers will be sketching at Trinity College grounds between 2PM and 4PM.

Sunday 23rd July 2017 Dublin Sketchers will be sketching at Trinity College grounds between 2PM and 4PM. Coffee 4PM at Centra, Westland Row (downstairs).

Consider sketching at the Museum Building, Trinity College, a beautiful Venetian Byzantine style palace built in 1857.

There is a connection to sketching here because the carvings on the exterior are by the O’Shea brothers from Ballyhooley, Co Cork who as young boys at school sketched plants, leaves and flowers as part of their education. This early beginning must have had some influence because they later excelled at free style stone carving working directly on the stone in the building. They didn’t make models first and then copy and carve them in a workshop, they picked wildflowers on the way to work, stood on a scaffold and worked directly from these.

They famously carved monkeys, parrots and owls at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History using live animals in cages but are rumoured to have got in to trouble when some of these had a certain resemblance to certain individuals associated with the university.

If you want to see some of their carved monkeys in Dublin go to Alliance Francaise on Kildare Street (Kildare St Club) where you can see them playing the same game of billiards since 1860 at the base of the columns on the front facade of the building.

The Trinity Museum building has capitals of shamrock, acanthus, oak, daffodils and lilies with half hidden cats, snakes, birds, squirrels and frogs. Here too are Aesops Fables and maybe one that relates to Darwin’s theory of evolution.

To work free like this had to be fun but it was also fearless. They must have maintained their sense of wonder and excitement since they were little boys sketching in a field in rural 19th century Co Cork.

The Museum Building is only a suggestion, there are many other exciting sketch locations and opportunities within the grounds of trinity waiting to be discovered
If it’s your first time out and you can’t spot anyone who looks like a sketcher at 2pm, just choose something to draw and get stuck in. Keep your eyes open for anyone carrying a sketchbook and say hello. New people come along almost every week so don't be shy about introducing yourself.  It's a nice friendly gathering and you'll get know us over coffee from 4pm. Don't worry if you're late, some of us usually are! You need to bring your own paper and pens/pencils etc.
Hope we’ll see you there.

4PM coffee at Centra, Westland Row (downstairs).

Sketching Weekend on Inis Oirr, Aran Islands, 14 - 17 Sept

Through connections with Pat, a regular with Dublin Sketchers, there will be a weekend of sketching on Inis Oírr, the smallest of the Aran Islands, in September. This will be part of Feile na gCloch 2017, or Festival of Stone, that incorporates stone wall building, stone carving and letter carving workshops.

Here are the essentials of the sketching element of the festival, in case you want to start making plans.

If you would like a pdf version of the brochure, please email dublinsketchers at gmail dot com and we can send one out to you.

As with our previous trip to the island, you’ll be responsible for getting yourself onto the island, and making sure you have accommodation arranged.

Details of accommodation are below. The island is very small, so all B&B's are pretty accessible. South Aran House and Tigh Ruairi's have good reviews on Trip Advisor. Maybe ask around at Sketchers to see who else is going and who might like to share a room / book into the same place as you.

We'll be spending most of our time out sketching, so where you rest your head in the evening is more about comfort! If you are planning on making the trip, do book accommodation now, as it's a popular weekend.

Around the festival schedule below, there is plenty of time to explore the island, as well as social time. Lunch is part of the festival cost, and most people eat together in the hotel of an evening.

Booking details are below.
