Sunday 3 December, National Gallery and Zurich Portrait Prize 2023

On Sunday the 3rd of December, Dublin Sketchers will sketch at the National Gallery from 2pm and meet for drinks at 4pm in Lincoln's Inn

If it’s your first time out and you can’t spot anyone at 2pm, just choose something to sketch and get stuck in. Keep your eyes open for anyone carrying a sketchbook and say hello. It's a friendly crowd who you’ll get to know over a drink from 4pm. Don't worry if you're late, most of us usually are! You need to bring your own paper and pens/pencils etc.

At the National Gallery, you will have the opportunity to see the short-listed entries for the Zurich Portrait Prize, with our very own Marie Lemen as one of the super-talented artists! And of course, there's lots more to sketch in all wings of the Gallery.

From 4pm, we'll gather for a drink and to enjoy each other’s sketches at the Lincoln's Inn pub where a table has been reserved. A bunch of sketchers will magically appear.

If you would like your sketch to be added to the website, email it to dublinsketchers @ gmail .com or post it to the Dublin Sketchers Social WhatsApp group if you are on that. Please edit your image so that it is low res and properly oriented for posting to the website. If you are posting your sketch on Instagram please hashtag #dublinsketchers (and #urbansketchers if you're sketching on location from direct observation).

Hope to see you there.

19th November Arbour Hill

On Sunday the 19th November Dublin Sketchers will sketch in/at Arbour Hill (rain backup: Collins Barracks) from 2pm and meet for drinks at 4pm in The Glimmer Man.

Spots of interest: Stoneybatter, Arbour Hill Memorial, Church, Cemetery, Prison, Billy Edwards Park, Halliday Square

Arbour Hill is an area of Dublin within the inner city on the Northside of the River Liffey, in the Dublin 7 postal district. Arbour Hill, the road of the same name, runs west from Blackhall Place in Stoneybatter, and separates Collins Barracks, now hosting part of the National Museum of Ireland, to the south from Arbour Hill Prison to the north,[2] whose graveyard includes the burial plot of the signatories of the Easter Proclamation and other leaders executed after the 1916 Rising. St Bricin's Military Hospital, formerly the King George V Hospital, is also located in Arbour Hill.

Stoneybatter, historically known as BohernagloghIt is often referred to as Dublin's "hipster quarter"[2] and was in TimeOut magazine's list of '40 coolest neighbourhoods in the world' in 2019.[3] Set for many films (Angela’s Ashes, Micheal Collins) Apart from the striking artisan dwellings, the area is also known for its prominent Viking street names. For example, there is Viking Road, Olaf Road, Thor Place, Sitric Road, Norseman Place, Ard Ri Road, Malachi Road, Ostman Place, Ivar Street, Sigurd Road and Harold Road. At the time of the Norman invasion, the Vikings, Ostmen or Austmenn (men of the East) as they called themselves, were exiled to the north of the Liffey where they founded the hamlet of Ostmenstown, later to become Oxmantown.
