Dublin Sketchers get together every Sunday afternoon in Dublin to sketch. We go to a different place each week. Check here before hand to see where we are off to. Come along if you fancy it! We start sketching from 2pm and meet at 4pm for a drink and chat. We are part of the global Urban Sketchers community.
Sunday 3rd
June 2018 Dublin Sketchers will be sketching at Store Street Plaza, between 2PM
and 4PM. Coffee 4PM at Art Café, Corner of Gardener St Lower and
Frenchman’s Lane (under railway bridge)
Store St Plaza is outside the curved front facade of Store
St Garda Station beside Busarus Luas station stop. There’s outdoor seating with
views of two railway bridges, the Dart running overhead, the Luas every few
minutes and countrywide buses arriving and departing. There’s the Custom House
dome nearby and a pub with a red canopy, the Coroner’s Court, an hotel, bikes,
cars, overhead wires, tram tracks, lamp posts with shamrocks, advertising
signs, posters and people in a hurry everywhere; it’s a hive of activity. Find
a stone seat; you’ll have a number of
views to sketch and you’ll have other sketchers close by.
If it’s your first time out and you can’t spot anyone who
looks like a sketcher at 2pm, just choose something to draw and get stuck in.
Keep your eyes open for anyone carrying a sketchbook and say hello. New people
come along almost every week so don't be shy about introducing yourself.It's a nice friendly gathering and you'll get
know us over coffee from 4pm. Don't worry if you're late, some of us usually
are! You need to bring your own paper and pens/pencils etc.
At 4PM we will meet at The Art café, visible from the plaza,
under a railway bridge, corner of Gardener St Lower and Frenchman’s Lane
visible.
This week we will be drawing in Trinity College, starting from 2 pm.
At 4pm we will meet for a drink at The Lincoln's Inn, a pub on Lincoln Place around the back of Trinity. If you can’t find any sketchers at the beginning don’t worry … and if you’re late you won’t be the only one. It’s Sunday afternoon and we’re not famous for our punctuality. Just get started and keep your eyes open for other sketchers.
This week we will be drawing at the Harold's Cross Festival http://www.haroldscross.org/, starting from 2 pm. Most of the action will be in and around Harold's Cross Park, where there will be music for most of the afternoon.
At 4pm we will meet for a picnic in the park. It's not a very big park, so if it's your first time, look for people with sketchbooks and come over and say hello! It looks like there are food stalls and toilets!

The weather forecast is a little uncertain. If it starts raining, you can try some of the local cafés - Five Points Café at 288A Harold's Cross Road (towards Leinster Road) and HX46, at 46 Harold's Cross Road (nearer to the bridge) both come highly recommended.
Also, there is an interesting exhibition, called "Queens of Art" at the Galerie Impromptu , 286 Harold's Cross Road, across from the Maxol Station. Local artist, Sheila Flaherty, who occasionally joins us on our outings, has invited us to the opening on Thursday evening. So drop in and say Hi!
On Sunday 13th of May Dublin Sketchers are going to sketch around Westland Row. We will be inspired by James Joyce's epic book about Dublin - Ulysses.

Note: this will not be a sketch crawl, but feel free to move around the area to explore the setting of the Lotus Eaters chapter!
If you want a bit of background to Ulysses and the Lotus Eaters chapter, meet on the steps of St Andrews Church at 2pm.
Spots of note:
Sweny's Chemist, at the top of Westland Row, where Bloom buys lemon soap. This location is available from 1 to 3pm. There is a reading in German at 2pm, but it's generally not too busy. The Italian reading at 3 is often busy so they would like us to make room for the Italian visitors by then.
St Andrews Church, referred to as All Hallows (just in case you're searching through the chapter). I have checked with one of the priests, and they are happy for us to sketch inside the church, but note that there is a mass from 2 to 3, so try to go in earlier or later. Preferably earlier as the priest told me that some of the other priests close the church after the mass on Sundays! So 1 to 2pm, preferably.
Note that Bloom enters the church "by the rere", which is on Cumberland Street South, an area that looks worth exploring!
Post Office near Pearse Station, where Bloom collects a letter from a lady friend. Unfortunately this no longer exists, but the Centra has a post office sign, so you could sketch in the café there, particularly if the weather is wet.
Pearse Station: there are some references to the trains passing by and to the station itself.

Ulysses sketchbook project 2018
Between February and June, Dublin Sketchers will get down and dirty with James Joyce. We’ll sketch in some of the places that appear in his big book Ulysses – a 700 page crazy epic that takes place on one day in Dublin in 1904. That day is celebrated every year as Bloomsday, 16th June. Here's an 18 minute introto the whole book.
TheDrawing on Joycesketchbook project will take inspiration fromUlysses –
the stories, the characters, the rumour and humour. We’ll sketch pubs,
chemists and cafés. Parks, martello towers and cemeteries.The sketchbooks will be a record of time and place, now and then. They will reveal Ulysses, one drawing at a time.
The
sketch books will be exhibited during the Bloomsday Festival. If you
don’t want to exhibit your sketches, that is totally fine. Just come out
with Dublin Sketchers as usual.

It felt like the whole population of Dublin headed off to Dun Laoghaire on Sunday, drawn by the sunshine and the sea! We all found our own places to sketch, in quiet spots or right in the middle of the action. And we even managed to get a drink afterwards, despite the queues at the bar! And Aodh did get her Teddy's ice-cream after all!
Ireland is the best place on earth when the sun shines!
Dun Laoghaire is easily accessible by Dart or bus (46A, 75 and many others) . If you like to sketch food, markets and people, the DLRCoCo market is in People's Park on Sundays until 4pm. If there is a shower, you can take shelter and sketch inside the DLR Lexicon Library! At 4pm we will meet for a drink in the Lobby Bar in the Haddington House Hotel on Haddington Terrace (directions marked from Dart Station). Or in their garden at the front if it's warm enough!
