On Sunday, 29th of
October Dublin Sketchers will sketch at St. Laurence’s Church, Chapelizod (8MX4+W4
Dublin) from 2pm and meet for drinks at 4pm in The Mullingar House (8MX5+82
Dublin).
Chapelizod is a village preserved within Dublin. The
village lies in the lap of the rich and wooded valley of the Liffey and is
overlooked by the high grounds of the beautiful Phoenix Park on the one side,
and by the ridge of the Palmerstown hills on the other. Thus was
Chapelizod described in 1851 by the renowned Gothic horror writer, Joseph
Sheridan Le Fanu, former resident of the old village, in the introduction to
his collection, Ghost Stories of Chapelizod. Chapelizod is also full of
character, especially the seemingly gravity-defying gardens that slope
spectacularly down to the Liffey, adjacent to the Anna Livia Bridge in the
heart of the village.
The village is simple
in layout with its church and medieval tower having housing clustered around
it, a wedge-shaped square lined with tall eighteenth and later nineteenth and
twentieth century buildings and terraced streets and laneways. It retains its
footprint, narrow plot widths, the profile, and facades of its eighteenth and
nineteenth century buildings, all of which contribute to its eclectic character.
Unlike the Georgian squares and Victorian suburbs of Dublin City, Chapelizod
has an informality and organic morphology. It possesses a great range of
buildings and building styles. Great opportunity to sketch Chapelizod with
numerous intriguing subjects.
