14th Aug 2022- Glasnevin Cemetery

14th Aug 2022- Glasnevin Cemetery

On Sunday the 14th Aug, Dublin Sketchers will sketch around Glasnevin Cemetery from 2pm and meet for drinks at 4pm in The Tower Cafe. There are lots of good spots to draw from. Hopefully the weather will be good.

History of the place Glasnevin Cemetery (Irish: Reilig Ghlas Naíon) is a large cemetery in Glasnevin, Dublin, Ireland which opened in 1832. It holds the graves and memorials of several notable figures, and has a museum. [source: wikipedia]

If it’s your first time out and you can’t spot anyone at 2pm, just choose something to sketch and get stuck in. Keep your eyes open for anyone carrying a sketchbook and say hello. It's a friendly crowd who you’ll get to know over a drink from 4pm. Don't worry if you're late, most of us usually are! You need to bring your own paper and pens/pencils etc.

If you would like your sketch to be added to the website, email it to dublinsketchers @ gmail .com or post it to the Dublin Sketchers Social WhatsApp group if you are on that. Please edit your image so that it is low res and properly oriented for posting to the website.

Hope to see you there!

Sketches from Glasnevin Cemetery - 29 April 2018

A cold sunny day at Glasnevin Cemetery on Sunday. Well worth a visit. It's a working cemetery, but also a tourist attraction (the Hop On/Hop Off bus stops there!), with a museum, tours, and the opportunity to walk up to the top of the highest round tower in Ireland (55m), recently re-opened to the public.

Before we started, James read some passages from Ulysses, the Hades chapter, where Bloom and some of his friends go to the funeral of Paddy Dignam. Bloom reflects on death and decay, and the fertilising properties of the dead body!

The first thing that will strike you when you walk through Glasnevin is how vast it is. It is said that there are more Dubliners buried there than there are alive now in the city! But it is also wonderfully peaceful and bucolic, with beautiful trees growing among the graves. There is a gate to the Botanic Gardens, situated next door, and also a gate to the Gravediggers pub, where we met at 4 o'clock for a drink and a chat.

Glasnevin Cemetry

If there is such a thing as a perfect day to visit a cemetry, today would have been it! Wonderful weather and a great turn out. I think I managed to snap most people's work (but failed to note everyone's name, Sorry!) so see if you can identify who drew what..... The Galvinator was playing with his I pad, but I didn't manage to photograph what his out put was!
