Sunday 26 May - Olivier Corner Gallery

 

On Sunday 26 May, Olivier from the Olivier Cornet Gallery at 3 Great Denmark Street will welcome us from 2pm and we will meet for drinks at 4pm at the Castle Hotel (there is a bar in the basement). There's an interesting exhibition at the gallery at the moment. And plenty of space to sketch in the hall, stairs and in the stockroom. Please be careful if you're using watercolours. No oil paints allowed.

If it’s your first time out and you can’t spot anyone at 2pm, just choose something to sketch and get stuck in. Keep your eyes open for anyone carrying a sketchbook and say hello. It's a friendly crowd who you’ll get to know over a drink from 4pm. Don't worry if you're late, most of us usually are! You need to bring your own paper and pens/pencils etc. 

 

From 4pm, we'll gather for a drink and to enjoy each other’s sketches at the Castle Hotel. A bunch of sketchers will magically appear.

Sunday 21 November - Olivier Cornet Gallery

On Sunday 21st November, Dublin Sketchers will sketch at the Olivier Cornet Gallery from 2pm. 

It is located at 3 Great Denmark Street in the Parnell Square Cultural Quarter. Nearby you will find the Hugh Lane Gallery and the Garden of Remembrance.

We will have access to the main exhibition area and the storage room beside it, as well as entrance hall and stairs.

The current exhibition is "Interlocked" a solo show by Annika Berglund.

No water media inside the gallery please.

Olivier will only be able to accommodate 10 sketchers in the gallery itself, and 5 or 6 in the hall and on the stairs. Visitors will be asked to show their Covid Pass and will be expected to wear their mask.

If you prefer, the Hugh Lane Gallery is just around the corner, and if you want to sketch outdoors, there are many options, including the Garden of Remembrance.

Rather than meeting in a pub or coffee shop, we'll gather outdoors to catch up and check out each other's work. At 4pm, we'll meet at the Garden of Remembrance.  In case of rain, there are plenty of cafés nearby. Please keep in mind current government guidelines on Covid.

Sunday 9 February - Olivier Cornet Gallery

This Sunday 9th of February, we will be sketching at the Olivier Cornet Gallery, at 3 Great Denmark Street, Dublin 1, from 2pm onwards.

At the top of Parnell Square East, turn right onto Gardiner Row. You will find the Olivier Cornet Gallery on the left, across the road from the Belvedere Hotel. Ring the doorbell to get in.
If this is your first time out, welcome! Just bring your favourite materials, find a spot that grabs your attention and start sketching! Other sketchers will appear through the afternoon carrying sketchbooks, pencils and pens. Don't worry if you're late, most of us usually are!

New people come along almost every week so don't be shy about introducing yourself. It's a friendly gathering and you'll get to know us over a drink at 4pm.
 
From 4pm, we'll gather for a coffee at The Old Music Shop http://www.oldmusicshop.ie/. A bunch of people who look like sketchers will magically appear.

Sunday 7 April - Hugh Lane Gallery

On Sunday 7th of April, Dublin Sketchers will sketch at the Hugh Lane Gallery  (Parnell Square) from 2PM.

Meet around 4pm at the Old Music Shop on North Frederick Street.

If the weather brightens, there is a lot to sketch outdoors in the area, the Garden of Rembembrance, Hardwicke Street, Blessington Street, and of course Eccles Street (where Leopold Bloom's house was, at number 7, which sadly no longer exists). 

 

For those of you participating in the Olives, Oysters and Oranges Bloomsday 2019 project, this is an area rich in inspiration, where Leopold Bloom starts his day, in the Calypso chapter. And if you're thinking food, maybe start the day with breakfast in bed, or grilled kidneys!

Mr Leopold Bloom ate with relish the inner organs of beasts and fowls. He liked thick giblet soup, nutty gizzards, a stuffed roast heart, liverslices fried with crustcrumbs, fried hencods' roes. Most of all he liked grilled mutton kidneys which gave to his palate a fine tang of faintly scented urine.

Also, the Olivier Cornet Gallery is around the corner if you want to drop in. It will be the last day of their wonderful exhibition slip.flux.flock!

Bloomsday 2019 – Olives, Oysters and Oranges, Dublin Sketchers’ Ulysses sketchbook project 2019

Between April and June, Dublin Sketchers will sketch in some of the locations that appear in James Joyce’s Ulysses, which takes place on one day in Dublin in 1904. That day is celebrated every year as Bloomsday, 16^th June.

The Olives, Oysters and Oranges sketchbook project will take inspiration from Ulysses, and in particular the references to food in Ulysses. Our work will parallel the exhibition of the same name at the Olivier Cornet Gallery. The title for this project is taken from Flicka Small’s current research into the semiotics of food in Ulysses.

The sketchbooks will be a record of time and place, now and then. They will reveal Ulysses, one drawing at a time.

How do I integrate food into my sketching? How do I link the locations we sketch at and the text from Ulysses? These are a few questions you may have. The answer, of course is entirely up to you. You may be inspired by the text itself of course. The whole universe as we know it exists in Ulysses. You can search through Ulysses online. Or you may be inspired by the locations themselves.  Or let your imagination run wild. Whatever your approach, have fun. Just like Joyce had fun when writing Ulysses.

If you want to join the Olives, Oysters and Oranges sketchbook project, the dates for the sketch crawls are below. Extra dates will be added when other locations can be sorted out.

The sketchbooks will be exhibited upstairs at the Olivier Cornet Gallery on 15^th and 16^th of June, during the Bloomsday Festival. If you don’t want to exhibit your sketches, that is totally fine. Just come out with Dublin Sketchers as usual.

Olives, Oysters and Oranges Sketchbook Project Dates

Sunday 28th April noon – 4pm: Sketch crawl from O'Connell Street down Grafton Street, past Davy Byrne’s pub and onto the National Library. This route follows the course of the hungry Lestrygonians chapter of Ulysses and ends up in the National Library for a heated debate about Shakespeare in the Scylla and Charybdis episode

Sunday 5^th May 2pm – 4pm: location to be advised.

Chiens Bleus, Chiens Gris

Next Thursday, 19 July, at 6:30 pm, the exhibition 'Chiens Bleus, Chiens Gris' will be opening at the Olivier Cornet Gallery, 3 Great Denmark Street, Dublin 1 (beside Belvedere College)

Those of you who know Leyho are already familiar with his wonderful work as an urban sketcher and graphic novelist.

For those who don't know him, this is a great opportunity to discover his work.
